In 1985, Lego introduced a third wave of new Train sets, overhauling the starter sets. They also released two auxilary sets, one of which was this 7817.

A-Model

1985 saw the release of this new crane wagon, which succeeds 7814. It looks more modern than 7814, and the new crane cabin keeps the operator dry. But from a technical point of view, it is less sophisticated. There is only one winch, and the angle of the crane arm is locked by a hinge plate construction. The model has support stands, useful when lifting heavy goods. It looks good and works fine, but it lacks the rough charm of 7814.

B-Model

The B-model represents an aerial work platform wagon.
